TRAITOR

TRAITOR

Starring: Don Cheadle, Guy Pierce, Jeff Daniels, Said Taghmaoui, Lorena Gale, Raad Rawi, Archie Panjabi

Directed by: Jeffrey Nachmanoff

Rated PG-13 for intense violent sequences, thematic material and brief language.

By John Delia

Traitor is a well thought out, seriously entertaining film that has a lot of suspense and intrigue.  I kept thinking what if it was real, could it happen today? It’s a must see for those adults that like their entertainment to generate a great conversation.

Traitor follows the plight of deep-seated U.S. Special Operations officer Samir Horn (Cheadle) who gets left out in the cold after the FBI lead by Roy Clayton (Pierce) makes a raid on a Yemen radical cell where he is selling them explosives.  Imprisoned without his CIA lifeline, Horn befriends Omar (Taghmaoui) one of the key members a dangerous terrorist group and they spring him due to his talent with suicide bombs.   Weaving his way deeply into their lair, Horn gives the impression that he has switched sides.  With the aid of a CIA operative Carter (Daniels) Horn sets off an explosion at the American Embassy in France to prove his loyalty to the terrorist group, but in his eyes it backfires.  This sets him up with what seems to be his only choice, an alliance with the terrorists.

Top-notch acting on the part of Don Cheadle, Said Taghmaoui and Guy Pierce make for a great show.  Cheadle’s character Horn really becomes possessed with a devotion to the terrorists ideals.  Being pulled between the Muslim and his U.S. upbringing, Cheadle makes even the toughest choices very believable.  Playing the part of an FBI agent who cracks terrorist cases around the world is no easy task, but Pierce is up for it as Clayton.  He turns over as many stones as necessary to find his target, but the one stone that can give him the right answer always eludes him.  As Horn’s savior Omar, Taghmauoui provides a very crafty, yet sympathetic Muslim terrorist who succumbs to Horn’s guise.

Direction by Nachmanoff is the key to the success of the film.  Able to control the action so it slows enough to bring out important plot points that give the audience full view of the action, intrigue and deceptions, shows the fine ability of his craft.

The film does contain some brief language and a lot of realistic killing so be cautious when deciding to bring pre-teens.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  Traitor is a captivating film that keeps you wondering throughout.

When straight arrow FBI agent Roy Clayton heads up the investigation into a dangerous international conspiracy, all clues seem to lead back to former U.S. Special Operations officer, Samir Horn. A mysterious figure with a web of connections to terrorist organizations, Horn has a knack for emerging on the scene just as a major operation goes down. The inter-agency task force looking into the case meets with Carter, a veteran CIA contractor who seemingly has his own agenda and Max Archer, a fellow FBI agent. The task force links Horn to a prison break in Yemen, a bombing in Nice and a raid in London, but a tangle of contradictory evidence emerges, forcing Clayton to question whether his quarry is a disaffected former military operative -- or something far more complicated. Obsessed with discovering the truth, Clayton tracks Horn across the globe as the elusive ex-soldier burrows deeper and deeper into a world of shadows and intrigue.

ELEGY - MOVIE REVIEW

ELEGY (Running Time: 106 min; Rated: R)

FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS

Reviewed by Denise Castillón

TOUCHING “ELEGY” DELIVERS A PASSIONATE TRIBUTE TO CINEMA

The superbly crafted ELEGY is a potent drama with brilliant and moving performances from Sir Ben Kingsley, Penelope Cruz and, quite undeniably, Dennis Hopper. Despite its pre-Oscar season release, this impressive film is sure to evoke multiple nominations by the Academy.

ELEGY embraces deliberate plotlines, strong character development and a deviance from a conclusive ending.  These characteristics of French Cinema are undoubtedly derive from its award-winning European director Isabel Coixet (THE SECRET LIFE OF WORDS, MY LIFE WITHOUT ME).

Nicholas Meyer’s screenplay, based on “The Dying Animal” by Philip Roth, retains the satirical humor and powerfully expressive language as written in the acclaimed author’s novella. In contrast to his previous film adaptation of Roth’s “The Human Stain”, Meyer effortlessly translates this shorter story onto screen.

Aging serial seducer and college lecturer, David Kepesh (BEN KINGSLEY), enjoys the attention of young female students drawn to his minor celebrity status as a cultural critic on TV and radio. Professor Kepesh calculatingly avoids sexual harassment charges by dating his students after posting their grades. He has managed to preserve his personal independence by maintaining purely sexual relationships, until Consuela Castillo’s (PENÉLOPE CRUZ) “elegant austerity” graces his classroom. Now, the once self-assured philanderer is completely befuddled by this “work of art”. David and his best friend, poet George O'Hearn (DENNIS HOPPER), regularly confide each others sexual escapades. George strongly urges his pal to end the tenuous affair before the girl does. Although still fearful of their 30-year age difference, Kepesh obsessively pursues the sexually-confident Cuban beauty. When David’s jealousy reduces him to impulsive and destructive adolescent-like behavior, George further advises that he should “stop worrying about growing old, and start worry about growing up.”

An introduction speech prepared by Kepesh, honoring George’s esteemed literary contributions, set offs significant and life-changing events for both friends.

A later turn in the plot leads to this rebuke from Consuela, “You do everything…alone.”, and causes Ben Kingsley’s character to finally grasp the costly restrictions of his treasured autonomy.

Additional fine performances given by cast members Patricia Clarkson, Peter Sarsgaard and Deborah Harry.

Directed by Isabel Coixet. Based on the novella, The Dying Animal, by Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Roth. Screenplay written by Nicholas Meyer. Cinematography directed by Jean-Claude Larrieu, with collaboration from the director, Isabel Coixet. Edited by Amy E. Duddleston.  Produced by Andre Lamal, Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg. Executive produced by Eric Reid. A Lakeshore Entertainment Group Production, released by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

DEAL - DVD REVIEW

DEAL on DVD

Starring: Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison, Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Tilly

Directed by: Gil Cates, Jr.

Rated PG-13 for language, sexual content and brief drug use

By John Delia

Although slow moving, I found Deal an interesting movie. Those into gambling or slow paced dramas should get a kick out of it. There are a few twists, but the main one was predictable. Very limited on bonus features, but the main one, which features some Texas Hold’Em tips, is worth the watch.

The storyline of Deal involves two complete opposites, Tommy Vision (Reynolds) a retired card player who lost in the big time and Alex Stillman (Harrison) a hotshot poker playing college kid who really doesn’t have a clue about big stakes gaming. After Stillman comes in at a high level on a internet poker contest, Vision looks him up for a possible opportunity of being his protégé. When the boy starts to click, Vision decides that he should enter the World Series of Poker. But after a miscue by Vision, Stillman takes an unexpected turn leading to a face-off between the two.

The film plays out quite slow and methodical, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Reynolds is at his best putting on his Jack Homer (Boogie Nights) face, which mimics one of the best roles he has ever had. But that’s not enough to carry the insubstantial predictable film that shadows in the recent 21, which had a similar gambling plot. Harrison’s acting was rather weak and if he had upped his performance it could have made a difference. Although not in the film for very long, I enjoyed Jennifer Tilly’s bold look and sassy candor at the poker table.

Gates, Jr. who directed and wrote the film does not make his characters believable enough. Everything is too easy, the only conflicts are Vision’s wife who doesn’t project enough anger to show her unhappiness with the breaking of their 20 year agreement and Stillman’s father who looks like he is just reciting lines instead of providing the emotion over his son’s decisions that may ruin a projected law career.

The only bonus feature ‘Winning Big at Texas Hold’Em’ involves two world championship poker players; ladies champion Isabelle Mercier and men’s 2004 World Series of Poker champion Greg Raymer. The cool feature gives a quick education on Texas Hold’Em and bluffing.

The film does contain some drug use and a scene of presumed sex so be cautioned when viewing the film around children.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Deal is a fascinating film but folds to predictability.

THE SHIELD SEASON 6 - DVD REVIEW

THE SHIELD Season 6 DVD

Cast members include: Michael Chiklis, Walton Goggins, Benito Martinez, CCH Pounder, Jay Carnes and Catherine Dent, with appearances by Forest Whitaker

Created By: Shawn Ryan

By John Delia

The sixth season of The Shield had me very involved with the plots intrigue and outcome of each of the 10 episodes. I have to admit, it was hard to sign off each night after watching several, but the series has enough incentive that made me look forward to another night of the crime drama. With no commercial interruptions the DVD plays like a movie.

In case you have not seen The Shield before, here is a synopsis provided by Sony/Fox/FX. The Shield plays out in a tough, morally ambiguous world in which the line between right and wrong is crossed every day. The series focuses on the tension between a group of corrupt but effective cops and a captain torn between bringing them down and advancing his own political ambitions. The Shield stars Michael Chiklis (The Commish) as rogue cop Det. Vic Mackey, leader of the elite Strike Team unit, who is effective at eliminating crime but operates under his own set of rules. Benito Martinez (Outbreak) plays Cpt. David Aceveda, the young precinct head who doesn’t like Mackey’s tactics and wants to bust him off the force. CCH Pounder (ER & Boycott) plays Det. Claudette Wyms, a veteran detective who understands Mackey and knows how to play both sides of the force.

The commentary on most of the episodes is very helpful and interesting, especially if you have missed previous seasons. For those who have seen season six on television, you have an opportunity to view deleted scenes that were not shown in the series. Some of the scenes are questionably desirable, while others were definitely not needed.

I found the behind the scenes featurettes interesting and educational. ‘The Directors’ featurette was the better of the two. It was enjoyable watching Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) putting a scene together and then watching it play out. If you are really into film this is an extra good educational piece for budding directors. Paris Barclay (NYPD Blue, CSI, Monk) was a completely different kind of director who depended more on the actors to bring a scene together. It was fascinating to watch him bring the characters to life. After watching this featurette, I though it must be very difficult for the continuing actors to deal with a new director in each episode.

As for the second feature, ‘Full Circle: Franka Potente’ it was more of a thank you to her for coming on board the series. Franka says in the featurette that she always wanted to do an episode on The Shield because she liked it so much. She is an amazing actress and made her character a favorite of mine.

Chiklis does a great job of keeping his character on track. I especially liked him in the episodes ‘On the Jones,’ ‘The New Guy,’ and ‘The Math of the Wrath.’ But the actor that makes the series work by estimation is Walton Goggins who plays Detective Shane Vendrell. Check him out and let me know if you agree.

The only downside I can find is with the character played by Forest Whitaker. I had seen the film Street Kings in which Whitaker plays a similar character. It bothered me a bit, but not enough to take away from the production. His performance here as with all his films is a standout.

FINAL ALNALYSIS: The Shield is a smart crime drama that plays out well and keeps your interest.

THE LONGSHOTS

Starring: Ice Cube, Keke Palmer, Tasha Smith and Miles Chandler

Directed by: Fred Durst

Rated PG for some thematic elements, mild language and brief rude humor

By John Delia

There’s a great little family film at the theatres and it’s just in time for all you little league football lovers. Based on a true story The Longshots has a lot of heart and courage providing a lesson for youngsters who have sidestepped their dreams because of bullying and pier pressure.

The Longshots centers on Curtis (Ice Cube), an out of work ex high school football star who wanders around the depressed town of Minden. Always stopping by Pop Warner little league football practices, Curtis lingers here because in the past he coached a team that was successful, unlike the current squad of boys.

Curtis’s sister-in-law Claire (smith) has had difficulty ‘making ends meet’ while raising her growing daughter Jasmine (Palmer), so she’s forced to take on more work, which causes her to come home late. Not wanting to leave her 11-year-old daughter alone after school, she hires Curtis to play babysitter. Jasmine a misfit in school and Curtis trying to cope with it, the two find themselves at odds. During one of his sitting days, Curtis discovers that Jasmine can toss a football better than most boys. With the Minden Pop Warner team in need of a quarterback, Curtis convinces the coach to try Jasmine out for the failing team. When Jasmine starts showing up the boys and the team starts winning, both Curtis and Jasmine’s worlds take a turn for the better.

Ice Cube does a wonderful job portraying the down and out uncle. His talks with Jasmine are not only inspiration to her but as it turns out, to himself. Youngsters who are playing little league football or just having trouble adjusting in school will learn a lot from the film and parents should also garner from it as well. But the most touching performance comes from Palmer, who provides an amazing portrait of the misfit youngster who finds her way out of the dilemma provided by her piers. Not everyone gets to stick it to those that mock them, but when Jasmine finds the way, it’s a total uplifting experience.

The actual incident that the story is based on took place in Illinois in 2003 when Jasmine was just eleven years old. She played in the Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee League for the Harvey Colts. During her school year she was an honor student, ran track and wrestled. In the 56 years of Pop Warner youth football, Jasmine was the only girl to ever play quarterback in its annual tournament.

This family film does contain some rude humor and mild language so may consider this when taking the very young.

FINAL ANALYSIS: The Longshots is a terrific family film that delivers a lot of heart.

DEATH RACE - MOVIE REVIEW

DEATH RACE

Starring: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson and Natalie Martinez

Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson

R for strong violence and language

By John Delia

It shows like a video game, it runs like a video game and it feels like a video game, but Death Race is bone-crunching movie. Hard punching, heart throbbing action with a heated storyline, Death Race slams into the screen with all the power of some of Paul W.S. Anderson’s previous big screen winners; Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator.

The film follows the story of Jensen Ames (Statham), a former champion racecar driver who gets framed for the murder of his wife and is sent to Terminal Island, a New York prison set in 2020. Only the most vicious of prisoners are housed on the Island and Warden Hennessey (Allen) uses her scheming creative juices to get a lot of cash from their notoriety. Creating a race where top drivers chosen from the inmate’s race to a finish creating death and mayhem along the way, and it’s computer televised. The brutal ‘sport’ has a favorite called Frankenstein and when the hideous driver gets pulverized one race day in a burst of fire, the warden must find a way to replace the icon without loosing the ratings. When Ames arrives at the prison, the warden cooks up a scheme that includes him and Frankenstein.

The special effects make the explosions, gunfire and wrecks spectacular. Bullets pelting the back of cars, missiles slamming into walls, spikes ripping tires and total chaos are the best ways to describe the action in Death Race.

As for the acting, there isn’t much need for any. Much like The Terminator and Die Hard, a few good phrases, some dialogue for plot and it’s a wrap. Statham does his best Transporter, Crank, and War impression and that’s all he really needs. But there’s one actor that needs to be mentioned and that’s Joan Allen. Her interpretation of the evil warden is right on the money. She totally does a convincing job showing that power can be truly diabolical.

Anderson continues to keep the flames burning and super powered characters doing his bidding. His Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator has to be two of the most high-energy flicks ever made. With Death Race, it’s just another day at the office. Throwing anything explosive he can into the film, not overdoing the dialogue or bothering to present a complicated plot, Anderson gives the ultimate in mindless chaos. Just what the action lover needs to escape a day at the office or a week of pounding the books.

Please note that the film is rated R for ultra violence, language and brutality. So please get a babysitter.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Death Race is a hard-nosed combat packed film for explosive action lovers.

HENRY POOLE IS HERE

HAMLET 2

HAMLET 2

This one is a very bad comedy. I do not recommend you go see it; don’t waist your time and money. What was Andrew Fleming thinking? He directed it and also co-wrote the screenplay with Pam Brady.

I understand what they were trying to do; an irreverent comedy about a failed actor that becomes an even worse Drama Teacher. They tried to do a politically incorrect musical play that is supposed to be the sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Unfortunately, failure and mediocrity are not always laughable. What was missing from this movie? First of all, the plot was completely predictable. Second, the main character does not redeem himself at any point; nothing of what happens at the end has been out of his own merit. He has been given credit for what he hasn’t earned.

This movie is a total waist of good talent like Steve Coogan (Dana Marschz), Catherine Keener (Brie Marschz) and David Arquette (Gary). I don’t know exactly where the failure occurred, perhaps in the editing room, or in the screenplay, but what I do know is that it should have never been shot. What a waste of time and money!

Don’t make the same mistake, find a different movie to go see.

BAGHEAD (Running Time: 84 min; Rated: R)

THREE OUT OF FIVE STARS

A BARREL OF LAUGHS SPILLS TO THRILLS IN “BAGHEAD”

Is a guy running around in the woods with a paper sack over his head funny or scary? The ultra-low budget film, BAGHEAD, effectively elicits both reactions.

With its naturalistic performances and improvisation by its actors, playing actors, BAGHEAD retains the Cassavetes-influenced film style the Duplass Brothers (Jay & Mark) applied in their first feature, THE PUFFY CHAIR. It would seem curious to find this low tech indie with no name actors jump from the film festival circuit onto the big screen. However, the entertainment and production values of BAGHEAD make it an audience winner. And, the fashion lends itself perfectly for the film’s goof on both the festival circuit and desperate actors.

Good-looking Matt (ROSS PARTRIDGE), his chubby sidekick, Chad (STEVE ZISSIS), the young & hot Michelle, (GRETA GERWIG), and Matt’s ex-girlfriend, Catherine, (ELISE MULLER) are friends and fellow actors. The foursome attend a local festival screening of an independent film. Afterwards, they scam their way into the after-party by walking in, while talking on their cell phone. Except for Matt, who unsuccessfully attempts to pass off his wallet as his cell phone. Commiserating later that night over their lack of recent lead acting roles, a decision is made to go up to a secluded cabin to write a film script starring themselves.

The isolated group struggles with sexual tension as well as a movie plot for their script. Chad is crushing on Michelle, who thinks of him like a brother. Jealous Catherine tries to squash Michelle’s interest in Matt. After Chad reproaches Matt with “You get all the girls. You’re Michael Jordan, and I’m Bill Laimbeer!”, Matt agrees to keep away from Michelle to honor his friendship with Chad.

Waking up the next morning from their first night in the cabin, Michelle shares her all-too-real nightmare about seeing a guy running through the woods with a paper sack over his head. Her dream inspires the plot for their movie.

First, Catherine, then later Chad, disappears. Matt and Michelle are convinced they playing a joke, and spend the day drinking. When things get too steamy between them, Matt retreats to room to “release” his sexual frustration. Suddenly, Chad and Catherine come barging into Matt’s room with paper bags over their heads, expecting to catch him in bed with Michelle. Next, the bickering group hears strange noises coming from outside.

They all are surprised and shocked to witness the “Baghead” disabling their car! The friends now come together to prove, once and for all, if this is for real or another hoax!

This is a funny, funny, funny film. I don't know who to praise first, Ben Stiller for writing and directing it, Tom Cruise for stealing it, Robert Downey Jr. for the most hilarious send up of a black-face performer, or Jack Black for, well, just being Jack Black. I don't think it matters, what does matter is you'll laugh your butt off. It's filled with standout cameos throughout by great performers who are having the time of their lives, just being stupid. This is a "run to see" feel good film, a true home run for Stiller and crew! Enjoy!

Rated R for strong violence, sexual content including graphic nudity and dialogue, language and drug use

By John Delia

Unless you are a hard-core biker, like a lot of rock music mixed in with violence, or are adamant about seeing every ‘grind house’ movie that hits the screen, don’t bother with this clunker. The poster itself provides a warning; “The rebellion against all there is.” The film has a jumbled plot, gratuitous nudity in almost every scene, poor acting and meaningless dialogue.

Please read this carefully, because if you go to see it, I think this is what it is all about. Members of the 666er biker gang slice and burn a young Comanche Indian girl to death. Thirty-five years later her son and her lovers who are members the rival Victors gang get even. In between there are a lot of flashbacks on the murder, needless character buildup, and a lot of biker killings.

There are very few good things about Hell Ride. The ‘grind house’ filming effect is good, and if you are a lover of the cinematic look, this will probably be a good thing. They kill off a lot of tough bikers, sometimes twice, and that may be a good thing. The acting of Dennis Hopper is a good thing, because without him the film would be totally intolerable. Some of the women in the film are beautiful, even though their acting needs to be polished up a lot.

Hell Ride tends to get away from itself and that’s probably the fault of the director. It looked like it was originally made as a full sequence movie with a reveal in the beginning and then played out to its showdown ending. But then it looks like the editor decided to snip and rearrange the scenes in order to try and delay the reveal and the obvious ‘twist’ ending. And finally, the acting leaves a lot to be desired unless ‘campy’ is an acceptable type of performance.

A BIG warning here, there is a lot of frontal female nudity, sexual content with dialogue, drug use, brutality, strong violence and gore. (And sometimes all during the same scene.)

FINAL ANALYSIS: Hell Ride dooms itself with a jumbled plot and very little substance.

Written and directed by Larry Bishop, this movie leaves much to be desired. Beginning with a weak screenplay, the only things you see on the screen are: nudity, motorcycles, and death. Now, anyone will say that those are the perfect ingredients for a great movie, but, without a good plot that will hold them, those ingredients are not good for anything.

I spent 83 very boring minutes, even though you have good actors like Dennis Hopper and Michael Madsen. It seems that they tried, unsuccessfully, to recreate the Hell’s Angels movies of the late 60’s.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS

The Clone Wars introduce un nuevo carácter: Ahsoka Tano.

Star Wars, The Clone Wars
4 Stars

The Clone Wars, an animated Star Wars tale for children, tells a story of the time between Star Wars 2 and Star Wars 3, when the universe was deep into the war.
I liked it. I didn't expect to. The voices of the original actors, for the most part have been replaced, the animation was not what I expected from Lucas Film, and the story was contrived. Yet despite all that, I was sucked right into it.
This film, the predecessor to the animated series that hits TV later this year, sets up the whole premise beautifully, and it adds a new major character Ahsoka Tano, a precocious 14 year old Padawan designed to win the hearts of the young audiences that this series is designed to appeal to.
Changing the live action Star Wars world into an animated one was, I imagine, a daunting task filled with endless choices.
I can see Lucas sitting at his desk worrying over little details like the look of the hair style drawn on Skywalker and the exact size of each explosion.
Check it out if you like the Star Wars universe and can follow it into an animated vision.

THE PERFECT GAME - REVISIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

THE PERFECT GAME

The Perfect Game

Based on a real story, The Perfect Game, directed by William Dear, is a must see movie. It is the story of a group of kids from Monterrey, Mexico who love baseball but have not equipment. Cesar, a former member of the St. Louis Cardinals ends up in their village, and the boys convince him to form a little league baseball team. When they go to the United States and start winning, the lives of everyone in the small village change.

The script, written by W. William Winokur, is based on an actual event taking place in 1957. This movie takes us back to that time, in which racism and discrimination were an issue, just because you were different. Today, people have forgotten that the situations of segregation in restaurants, public bathrooms, busses, etc ever existed. The film shows us a few snippets to remind us.

The acting of the children was great, as it was that of known actors, like Cheech Marin, who played the role of Father Esteban and Clifton Collins Jr., Coach Cesar. . I loved the music and the cinematography showing the poverty of the village and the workings of the steel mill at which they slaved to put food on their tables.

You will have to see the film to know what happens and get the wonderful feeling from their magical baseball adventure. This is a movie for the entire family. It will tug at your heart, not only if you are a baseball lover, but also a lover of humanity.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

English Translation

Brideshead Revisited, directed by Julian Jarrold, is the story of an aristocratic and devout Catholic family in England on the verge of WWII. The story of the Flyte family and in particular that of Sebastian and Julia, who are brother and sister is revisited thru the eyes of Capitan Charles Ryder who comes back to the Brideshead Castle during the war.

I liked the cinematography because it captures the period very well. The music also goes very well with the film. Nevertheless, this latest version of Brideshead leaves much to be desired. The BBC original series aired on television in 1981, starring Jeremy Irons was so far superior as to defy comparison.

This script, written by Jeremy Brock, does not do justice to the original novel written by Evelyn Waugh. Even though the character of Sebastian was compelling, at the end of the movie I had a feeling of disappointment, as though there was something missing, and actually, there was.

SWING VOTE - REVISIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

SWING VOTE

Swing vote has my vote. It is a comedy about the most improbable event in the history of presidential elections. The decisive vote falls in the hands of the man least interested in the elections: Bud Johnson, who lives in a small town in New Mexico. Kevin Costner plays the main character, with Madeline Carroll, who plays his daughter, Molly Johnson.

The main story is about an ordinary man, who from one day to the next becomes the most famous and sought after person in the presidential campaign and has to face himself once and for all in order to make the most important decision of his life.

But that is not all, from my point of view, there is another story that is weaved simultaneously and that is the story of Molly Johnson. Her story represents the story of our youth in our present society, absolutely abandoned by irresponsible parents, totally consumed with their narcissistic pursuits. It is a poignant social commentary that is palpable throughout this movie.

I believe Swing Vote is a movie worth seeing.

SIXTY SIX

Starring: Greg Sulkin, Eddie Marsan, Helena Bonham Carter, Peter Serafinowicz, Ben Newton and Stephen Rea

Directed By: Paul Weiland

PG-13 for language, some sexual content and brief nudity

By John Delia

There are several special films hitting theatres and if you can find one playing Sixty Six, take time out to enjoy some very funny and touching entertainment. It is a kick!

It is the summer of '66, and England is about to be consumed by World Cup Fever. For 12 year-old Bernie (Sulkin) though, the biggest day of his life is looming: his Bar Mitzvah, the day he becomes a man. He dreams of having the time of his life like his older brother did when his family gave the biggest party the neighborhood had ever seen. However, times have changed and the threat of losing their grocery business to a large supermarket chain moving in next door has been increasingly distracting Bernie’s family. But that doesn’t stop him from creating the biggest Bar Mitzvah party ever. As the chosen party day grows closer the grand scale of Bernie's Bar Mitzvah diminishes daily. Worst of all the Cup Final is scheduled to take place on the same day and if England makes it into the finals the number of guests will dwindle and Bernie's longed-for Bar Mitzvah may become a complete disaster.

The film comes together nicely under the direction of Weiland. Although the storyline is very predictable, the fun of seeing the script played out makes up for it. I enjoyed the way Weiland made sure there was plenty of screen time for Sulkin who plays Bernie the Bar Mitzvah boy. And some of the scenes are hilarious. I especially loved the scene where Bernie’s parents take the plastic off their furniture and roll up the expensive carpet whenever someone comes for a visit.

The characters written into the story are interesting and lovable. Bernie’s father Manny (Marsan) hides his profits in the attic because he doesn’t trust banks, his uncle Jimmy (Serafinowicz) and father don’t get along, but that doesn’t stop Jimmy from being the family clown.

But the greatest character of all is Bernie, a nerdy kid who always gets chosen last for a football game, even following a crippled boy and a German. Bernie constantly gets picked-on by his older brother Alvie (Newton), but that doesn’t stop him from dreaming that his Bar Mitzvah is going to make Alvie’s look like a ‘children’s tea party.’ “It’s going to be the Jesus Christ of Bar Mitzvahs,” says Bernie. It’s the kind of comedy that made Radio Days and My Big Fat Greek Wedding a hit.

The film unfortunately does contain some strong language, sexual situations and brief nudity, so please consider this when bringing your very young to the film.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Sixty Six is a great family film that will tickle your funny bone and warm your heart. Its summer’s sleeper hit.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

Starring: Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw, and Hayley Atwell

Directed By: Julian Jarrold

PG-13 for brief nudity and sexual content

By John Delia

Brideshead Revisited is long, involving with a lot of unsatisfying dialogue, but the cinematography’s amazing. Not a Howard’s End or even an Atonement, this movie period piece from a book written by Evelyn Waugh doesn’t satisfy. For those that like movies that will draw them away to another time and continent and provide some distraction from the humdrum, Brideshead Revisited may be your cup of English tea.

The film centers on Charles Ryder (Goode) who buddies up with a schoolmate Sebastian Flyte (Whishaw) and subsequently gets invited to his home called Brideshead. While at the huge mansion he meets his sister Julia and becomes infatuated with her. Sebastian’s love starts to grow for Charles and the two seem to be on their way to becoming a couple. But Charles’s love is more of a strong bond of friendship for Sebastian and he starts to pull away from Sebastian’s affections. When Sebastian sees Charles make a play for Julia at an affair, their friendship and the Flyte family’s takes a turn for the worse.

For me there are many problems with Brideshead Revisited. Give me more of a love story between Charles and Julia so I can see the decline of his obsession for Sebastian. Give me some acting, as I found the characters cold and unappealing. Give a challenging plot with some twists and turns to keep me involved. The film was so long that I was hoping the ship they were sailing on at one point was the Titanic and the movie would have some excitement.

There were some good points to the film, a lot of great cinematography featuring some gorgeous landscapes, a beautiful homestead and picturesque Venice. The costuming is magnificent and fits the period of pre-war England. The best performance comes from Emma Thompson as Lady Marchmain. Thompson’s character is strong, amusing at times and more realistic than the other roles in the film.

There is some very brief nudity and a scene of sexual inference which should not be a problem for the over 13 group. But, boring may be a problem for anyone under 25. So keep this in mind when choosing to have your youngsters accompany you to this film. It would be best seen with gal friends or alone on a rainy day with nothing else to do.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Brideshead Revisited is a long winded film that does not satisfy.
